"Solid game if you're a fan"
I've been a Kenshin fan since the show aired in the U.S., and I've always wanted to play a Kenshin game. Wasn't ever interested in previous games, but this one looked decent so I decided to go for it. I don't understand a lick of japanese, but if you know the story you really don't have to.
Story - 7/10
This is probably the hardest portion to judge. On the one hand there are TONS of story scenes, and they don't seem to miss any beats. From what I can tell they cover everything, though I can't be certain. There are cutscenes with Sano and Capt. Sagara, a scene explaining Anji's past, things like this that a lot of anime games would leave out of their story modes. On the other hand...it's all japanese...so unless you can read and understand it, or you've seen the show, you won't have any clue what's going on.
There are 2 endings for each character, one good and bad. Kenshin's good ending seems to be the only one that actually follows what really happened. From what I can tell, Saito, Sano, and Aoshi's good endings are more like "what ifs". I haven't personally gotten the bad endings yet, but from what I hear they aren't that great.
Gameplay - 7/10
This is the main draw of the game. Being able to control these 4 characters in the Kenshin universe. It's fun as hell, for me anyway. The buttons are the same for all 4 characters, Kenshin, Saito, Sano, and Aoshi, however the game does an excellent job of making each fighter feel different and unique. You have your normal attacks using Square and Triangle, circle for dodging. You can combine square + X, square + triangle, and triangle + x to do moves. R1 is for blocking, L1 puts you into each character's stances. Battoujutsu for Kenshin, Gatoutsu for Saito, ect. Each character has 2 special moves, using R2 + Triangle, and L1 + R1 + Triangle. Special moves like the Kuzu Ryu Sen, Zero Gatoutsu, Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren, and Futae No Kawami.
Some fights are extremely easy, while others can take you quite awhile to beat. Fighting Soujiro the first time is a good challenge for example. Once you understand how to fight him though, he gets pretty easy, and that goes for mostly all the characters you fight in the game. There is also a survival mode, where you can pick any of the 4 characters, or load them from your story modes and fight through all the characters in the game. Which reminds me of the stats and such during story mode. You get experience points after fights and you get to spend them on moves and stats I'm guessing. I don't know for sure what I'm doing, so I just put points into random things, and it works out for me. The main drawback of the gameplay is the fact that theres no multiplayer at all. Would of been nice to have a vs. mode to fight with Hiko, Shishio, ect... against a friend.
Sound/Music - 10/10
Uses the music from the anime, and I personally loved the music in the anime. The voices are in japanese, but they sound good doing their attacks and such.
Graphics - 9/10
Some pretty good shell shading for the ps2. Some of the best I've seen on the ps2 actually.
Overall - 7/10
The main thing that hurts the score of the game the language. Even if you've seen the show, it would still be nice to see this game in english. It's fun solid game if your a fan of the show though, even if you don't understand japanese. If your a fan, I'd give it an 8/10. If it was in english, 9/10, and possibly 10/10 if it had a vs. mode and more characters to use.
